Wow, it has been quite some time since posting! Lots of updates!
First semester came and went. We began our second semester January 4th and after only 4 days back, the snow-geddon of 2011 hit Cobb County and shut us down for an entire week straight!! Unexpected break...I refuse to call it a snowcation because everyone is saying that and it is obnoxious. It was nice being trapped for a few days...did not really DO anything productive. Played with chihuahuas and ate candy. NO complaints!
This week is our first week back. So far yearbook has not really improved on our meeting of deadlines...I just do not know what is going on this year. Newspaper though, loving it! We found a printer, assigned sections, and have rough drafts ready to edit! The design aspect though is quite daunting. I have used InDesign once, at the ASU Reynold's Institute this summer, I am no designer and therefore cannot teach my students. I am literally teaching myself this program in hopes of coming back Monday with a nice little lesson planned. Our goal is to publish in TWO weeks. First edition!
On the personal life front, big news! Kevin and I got engaged Christmas night. The ring is more than I could ever expect or want..it is AMAZING. We are planning a June wedding...only month I don't have school/work...but the choosing of the venue has been a bit stressful. We were going for north GA mountains, but I remembered our trip to Beaufort, SC and thought how beautiful it would be to have a wedding there! We are making some venue visits in the weeks to come with hopes of tieing down a date.
So far, I have the dress, bridesmaid dresses, and colors chosen. We are doing lavendar, plum and sangria for the flowers with ivory, and the bridesmaid dresses are sangria. They are beautiful!! I am also working on our wedding site...www.mywedding.com/kevin&alyssasellors. I wish I could just take a week to plan!!!

Friday Friday :)
Taking over yearbook has been quite the task but I am reaping the benefits as our first major deadline soon approaches! This semester has been one of trial and error with teaching 3 new preps. I went from 1 to 3, which is a major change, that I love!
I start my Master's at KSU in the Spring...I have SO missed being in school and look forward to new challenges:) I will be on the other side of the podeum for once. My goals are getting closer and closer to either doing full time writing or teaching college. I love where I am but do look forward to some changes on the horizon!

Changes in the wind
The first day of Fall was Thursday and with this season of change I feel a change in goals...
The writing bug is getting me...bad. I love teaching but miss that open forum of pen and paper and mind.
Trying out some new avenues...wish me luck! :)

The Journey Continues...
Well...
As I had stated in earlier posts, I was a victim of the RIF process but got GREAT news yesterday...I am back! I just got my schedule for next year. I am going from teaching only one prep to now three! I thought I would be overwhelmed but I am actually excited. I must admit teaching the same thing three times per day can be repetitive at the least. I felt my 5th period kids were getting worn out Ms. Carnley and that is not fun for either of us.
My most exciting news is that I will now have a CLASSROOM! Don't get me wrong, I like being a floater. You have an "office", you can hide from wandering students ;) and teachers, and you have no mess to clean up at the end of the year. But I must say I do miss the decorating, the hominess associated with Ms. Carnley's classroom. I may enlist some helpers in the way of decor though.
One day left before I leave for Arizona! I was more nervous...leaving my baby chihuahua and love, leaving my boyfriend, etc. for two weeks...the longest time apart for me since...forever...but now I am anxious in a good way. There is something to be said for travelling alone. You get a kind of power, independence, and I don't know...thrill from it. I did spend time in Paris alone so If I can do that for 8 weeks surely I can do this for 2 weeks. I hope to meet a lot of new people. I have travelled all around this globe and yet have never travelled west of Alabama in my very own country.
This is probably my last post before leaving. Next time, from Arizona's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism:)!

So...as a second year teacher and recent recipient of my RIF (reduction in force) papers, being laid off, I have been trying to keep up with recent educational updates and news. BUT-it has been like a broken record.
Every article reports on what we SHOULD be doing...no mention of doing, implementing, or VOTING for goodness sakes!!! I read articles on how we should replace our board members and even the super but no one thinks of how to do it or why or anything like that. Personally, I do think this budget crisis lies on the board's shoulders alone. We have, for quite some time, spent money freely in education while watching houses foreclose. With no property tax, no school funds.
Education needs a revolution and fast. I LOVE teaching, it is a passion and an art as well as a calling and every teacher would agree but it is so hard to keep being abused and beaten by the profession you love. I sit here today on this first day of June not knowing if I have a job in the Fall...and this is no ONE persons fault, this county, and country needs a solution not involving loans and government bail outs.

Merry in the month of May

Well...just a few more weeks until I am Arizona bound! It has been nice just relaxing but I will admit, I miss my students, just a bit:) This is my first official week of summer!
What has been occupying most of my time is the new tutoring business I just started! The website is www.alyssatutors.com, home of Coffee House Tutors! I hope to get a good client base going. It is an exciting new business venture if nothing less.
I have been overwhelmed with reading as well. With two book clubs, preparing to teach two new preps in the Fall, and trying to read a few of my own choices on the side, I have been knocking out about a book per week! Which is awesome. This week I am reading Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, for book club #1, and Pleasure of Pain by C.S Lewis, for my pleasure read:) I am also flipping through newspaper guides, journalism guides, journalism 2.0, etc...in preparation for my newspaper conference and advising position in the Fall. The APA Style Book has been my favorite...oh the nerd I am:)
Not sure if I will make it to Destin this summer...which will be the first time in forever. :(. We will see...so far, May has been awesome and June is looking better than ever!

Beginnings
